Program Supports Summer Reading Reading Now Network Gifts Summer Home Libraries To Big Jackson Students Through the collaboration of surrounding counties literacy coaches (Ottawa, Mecosta-Osceola, and Newaygo) and the leaders of the Reading Now Network, approximately 600 new books were donated by Scholastic for students to participate in their 'My Books Summer' reading program. Thursday, May 25, the students of Big Jackson shopped among books that were specifically chosen for them based on their independent reading level. With much preparation, guidance and modeling from Big Jackson teacher Jen England, students got to pack a summer reading bag with reading strategy bookmarks, reading logs and comprehension activities to go along with their free books. NC RESA Literacy Coach, Leslie Smith and MOISD Literacy Coach, Amy Posey were able to help facilitate this amazing opportunity for our local children. Students brought home 4 books with the promise of 12 more personally picked books being mailed to them periodically throughout the summer. This program will keep students reading throughout the summer months to help prevent summer reading loss.

Butterflies, Bees Get New Garden NC RESA Ag students plant pollinator garden at Newaygo County Welcome Center The Newaygo County Welcome Center unveiled its pollinator garden in time for Memorial weekend although the butterflies will have to wait for the native plants to become established and flower. The garden is a cooperative effort between the Newaygo County Regional Education Service Center AgriScience students, the West Michigan Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative (WMGLSI), and the Newaygo County Welcome Center. Over two days, more than 30 students in the AgriScience Program through the NCRESA Career-Tech program cleared an overgrown area in front of the Welcome Center on M-37, then planted native grasses and flowering plants to attract pollinators like butterflies and honey bees. Images From PCA’s Super Hero Run The Newaygo County Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect held their first annual Super Hero Run featuring a 5k as well as a 1 mile fun run as part of Newayo’s Memorial Day Weekend activities. A gorgeous Saturday morning greeted the runners at the high school and after a rousing a capella version of the Star Spangled Banner as a kick-off a stream of Caped Crusaders, Winged Warriors, Men (and Women) of Steel and even an occasional Peter Parker alter-ego took to the streets of Newaygo. With a police escort guiding the way for this cadre of crime-fighters the neighborhoods they passed never looked safer. The theme fit well with the organization’s advocacy efforts since kids, particular the most vulnerable, all need a hero from time to time. Proceeds from the event went to supporting the programs of the local group and for more information on NCPCA you can go to their website at: http://www.newaygocountyprevention.org/ Mobile Mammogram Unit Next Stop: White Cloud Gerber Memorial brings mammogram on wheels to White Cloud July 7 to encourage cancer screenings Fremont- Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial will bring a mobile mammogram unit to White Cloud on July 7 in an effort to encourage women to get screened for breast cancer, especially women in the Croton area who may face challenges getting to the hospital in Fremont. A service of Spectrum Health Betty Ford Breast Care Services, the mobile unit will be parked at 103 North Charles Street in White Cloud, in the parking lot of Sally’s Restaurant from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Because the mobile unit can take a limited number of patients, women are asked to make an appointment to reserve a spot, by calling 616.774.7998, option 1. Walk-ins will be accepted if space is available. Women who schedule appointments are asked to bring insurance information. Free mammograms will be available for uninsured or under-insured women. For women who want to see if they qualify, call 616.486.6050. Breast cancer will affect one in eight women during her lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society. When detected early, breast cancer can be treated and cured. The American Cancer Society recommends women 40 years and older have a mammogram once a year.
